Sunday is your last chance at Thai street food until April – Frolic Hawaii

As the highly revered father of modern Thailand, the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s Dec. 5 birthday is celebrated by Thais as Father’s Day. Although it lands on Wednesday, the Thai Buddhist temple between Waipahu and Pearl City is getting the party started this Sunday, Dec. 2 with their popular and delicious Thai street food market. It’s the last major holiday before Songkran (Thai New Years) in April, so this is the temple’s final mouthwatering market of 2561 (that’s 2018 on the Gregorian calendar).



In additon to crispy gai tod fried chicken and grilled moo ping pork skewers, aunties and uncles of the temple will be cooking up a menu of specialty dishes from Chiang Mai to Hat Yai:

• Khi phalo – egg in shoyu sauce with pork
• Kaeng khiao wan luk chin pla – green curry with fishballs
• Kaeng kilek – young cassia leaves curry with pork
• Pa ped pla duk – spicy catfish
• Kaeng som kung – spicy and sour curry with shrimp
• Nam prik kapi – chili paste with vegetables
• Pad prik king moo – spicy long beans with pork
• Pla rad prik – deep fried whole fish with chili sauce
• Phanang ki – panang chicken curry
• Phad phed mai dong – spicy pickled bamboo
• Kaeng hed pheaa – Northern-style mushroom curry
• Nam prik phea pla duk – spicy shrimp paste catfish

Desserts include taro with sticky rice in banana leaf and a Thai take on halo-halo: coconut milk mixed with a rainbow of jellies and chewy bits. The noodle stand as well as the aunties making khanom krok coconut pancakes will also be there. Items are around $5 to $8 each while drinks like the sweet longan and Thai iced teas are just $1.

Our friends at the temple kndly request that visitors adhere to a conservative dress code out of respect for the monks and congregation worshipping at the temple: no tanktops or shorts for both guys and gals. Arrive by 11:30 a.m. for the best selection as they anticipate many items selling out before noon.
